After Tough Week, Owatonna Baseball and Softball Strive for Strong Finish

The end of the regular season is in sight for high school baseball and softball teams. Owatonna’s clubs are looking to reverse recent trends with sections approaching.

OHS baseball has dropped three in a row since a 6-5 win at Eden Prairie last Monday. The Huskies lost 6-4 to Albert Lea and 2-1 at Mankato West before falling at Mankato East 11-7 Friday. Against Eden Prairie, Owatonna found ways to push runners across the plate. That proved elusive the rest of the week in their conference games.

Monday, Owatonna (7-8, 2-5) hosts Rochester Mayo (9-5) in a makeup game at 5PM at Fuller Field at Dartts Park. The Spartans are 5-2 in league games, according to the Big Nine website, and trail Rochester Century (6-1) and Red Wing (6-2) in the conference race.

The Huskies’ remaining schedule includes a Tuesday game at Bell Field in Faribault at 7PM on KDHL AM 920. Thursday OHS hosts No. 12AAA Northfield in a 4PM doubleheader. Monday, May 22, No. 4AAA New Ulm plays at Dartts.

Owatonna has an outside chance at a home playoff game. They are projected sixth in the current QRF standings through www.minnesota-scores.net but have defeated John Marshall, who is ahead of them in the rankings. A win Monday over Mayo could impact their placing as well. No. 4 Lakeville North and No. 20 Rochester Century lead the section. Playoffs begin Saturday, May 27.

The Huskies softball squad dropped four out of five games last week. Owatonna sandwiched a 1-0 win over Albert Lea in between losses to Mankato East, Rochester Mayo and Farmington. OHS (6-10) hosts No. 2AAA Faribault (17-0) Tuesday at 5PM at Morehouse Park. On Thursday, Owatonna closes the season with a doubleheader at Northfield at 4PM on KRFO AM 1390.

Faribault and Mankato West will dual for the conference title Thursday at Alexander Park in Faribault.

Owatonna is projected seventh in the Section 1AAAA standings. No. 4 Farmington and No. 8 New Prague are the top two teams. The section tournament starts May 23.
