Minnesota High School Football Delayed Until Spring
St. Paul, MN (KROC-AM News) - The coronavirus pandemic has resulted in a dramatic shift for what has long been a fall tradition.
The Minnesota State High School League Board of Directors held a virtual meeting and voted 13-5 this afternoon to move the high school football season to the spring. The resolution also eliminates scrimmages and calls for a reduced schedule of football games when the season gets underway. Decisions concerning the football postseason were left for a future meeting.
The MSHL Board also voted to move Volleyball to the spring, while cross-country, soccer, girl's tennis and girl's swimming will take place this fall with shorter schedules and the elimination of large meets to curb the spread of COVID-19.
It was also decided to add a new fourth season to the high school athletic year. With football and volleyball moved to the traditional spring sports season, the MSHL Board approved moving traditional spring sports to a summer season running from May into early July.
