New population estimates by the Minnesota Demographers office show Owatonna has outgrown some nearby neighbors making it the 6th largest city outside of the Twin Cities metro area.

With a population of 27,544, Owatonna is larger than Austin (26,626), Winona (25,995), and Faribault (24,679).

The five Greater Minnesota cities that are larger than Owatonna are Moorhead, Duluth, Mankato, St. Cloud, and Rochester.

According to the Minnesota State Demographic Center, the five largest counties by population were Hennepin (1,293,651 residents), Ramsey (551,195), Dakota (444,985), Anoka (368,280), and Washington (274,589).

The total population of Minnesota in 2022, based upon our office's latest estimates, was 5,801,769. Additionally, there were 2,299,740 households in the state.

The fastest growing counties by population between 2021 and 2022 were Pine (4.0%), Wright (3.9%), Aitkin (3.8%), Pennington (3.7%), and Clay (3.5%).

The counties that added the most residents between 2021 and 2022 were Wright (5,779), Hennepin (4,006), Olmsted (3,859), Washington (3,784), and Sherburne (3,351). Ten counties have lost population since 2021.

The five largest Minnesota cities by population in 2022 were Minneapolis (436,934 residents), St. Paul (310,992), Rochester (125,055), Bloomington (91,330), and Duluth (86,924).
