Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) -The victim of a fatal shooting in Minneapolis early Sunday has been identified as an off-duty firefighter for a Twin Cities fire Department.

The City of Eagan issued a statement today indicating Firefighter Joseph Johns tragically passed away while off-duty. He had been a member of the Eagan Fire Department since 2015.

The Minneapolis Police Department today reported the shooting occurred around 12:40 AM in the 900 block of Cedar Avenue South. A news release says officers responded after receiving a call that indicated two people had been injured in a shooting.

When officers arrived at the scene, they found a man in his 40s with potentially life-threatening gunshot wounds. The statement says immediate medical care was provided at the scene before the shooting victim was transported to the Hennepin County Medical Center, where he later died.

A second shooting victim later arrived at HCMC in a passenger vehicle. Officials say his injuries were non-life-threatening.

Minneapolis police say the preliminary investigation into the incident indicates shots were fired at a group of people gathered in a parking lot and that led to an exchange of gunfire. The news release says homicide detectives are now working to determine the sequence of events led up to the shooting.

At last report, there had not been any arrests in the case.
