MN Man Accused of Shooting at Police Charged in Federal Court
Minneapolis, MN (KROC-AM News) - A southern Minnesota man is facing a federal charge in connection with a violent home invasion last weekend during which he allegedly fired a gun at police officers.
The US Attorney for Minnesota says 31-year-old Kamau Evans of Mankato was arraigned Thursday on a charge of illegal possession of a firearm. Federal prosecutors say, due to his prior felony convictions, Evans is prohibited under federal law from possessing firearms or ammunition at any time.
Federal prosecutors say a man, identified as Evans, broke into a residence in North Minneapolis on Sunday by shattering a sliding glass door. It's alleged that he then assaulted two of the occupants with a firearm and brandished a handgun at a child hiding in a closet while holding the three people against their will.
Court records say Minneapolis Police responded to the residence and were able to take one of the victims out of the house. The officers then went into the home protected by ballistic shields and came under fire when Evans appeared in a stairwell as the officers were walking up the stairs.
The criminal complaint states that following the shooting, Evans escaped from the house by leaping from a bathroom window. He was captured and arrested while attempting to flee through the backyard. A 9 mm semi-automatic pistol was recovered by Minneapolis Police on the side of the garage where Evans was apprehended.
According to the criminal complaint, earlier in the day, a woman called 911 and reported that a man, identified as Evans, had broken into her south Minneapolis apartment. The woman indicated that she and her two children were able to safely flee from the home after the Evans shattered a window into her bedroom.
Evans was previously charged in state court with multiple counts of felony assault.
