Abort! Rare Video Shows 740-Foot Algoma Ship Making Emergency Turn In Duluth
I was checking out one of my favorite YouTube channels the other day to see some cool videos of ships coming in under the lift bridge. Vibe with Mike does a great job documenting the ships that come in and sharing interesting facts.
This was the first time for him in all of his years of documenting and videoing ships coming into the harbor. The 740-foot ship Algoma had to do an emergency turn when the lift bridge wouldn't be up in time. This happened this winter on a warmer-than-average December day.

The reason for this is that an emergency vehicle was crossing over the bridge to Park Point. Mike heard it on his marine radio that the ship needed to turn around.
The Algoma was fully loaded with salt and approaching the harbor in the fog. These boats aren't easy to maneuver or stop, so the emergency turn had to take place. It may seem like it's a ways off, but it's closer than you think.
The Algoma turned to the east and made a loop before beginning its second approach to the lift bridge.
Mike says it looked like a ghost ship coming in on Lake Superior with the fog and poor visibility. It's pretty cool to see. The Algoma gave a short horn blast as they went under the bridge and it wasn't the standard captain's salute that we normally hear.
