On Tuesday, September 13, the Waseca County Farm Bureau will be hosting the 19th annual Farm and Home Safety Day. More that 280 fifth-graders will be at Farmamerica, just west of Waseca. Debbie Roemhildt is the coordinator for the safety day as she has done for many years. Roemhildt said, "we are offering this program to prevent accidents and, if there is an accident, we want to show the students what they can do to help themselves and someone else."

There will be six major safety stations that groups of students will rotate to: Animal Safety with Dr. Troy Summers, Summers Ridge Veterinary Janesville; Tractor/PTP Safety with Andy Jewison from Ag Power Enterprises; ATV/Snowmobile/Boat Safety with Jay Dulas, Waseca; Electrical Safety with Jack Schwab from Steele Waseca Cooperative; Chemical Safety with Jason Androli from Innovative Seed Consulting, Claremont; and Lawn Mower and Chainsaw Safety with John McCabe from Charlie's Hardware.

The highlight of the day will be a simulated PTO tractor accident. I have seen this demonstration and it is very vivid. They take a straw dummy and it gets caught in a power take off. You see the dummy fly around the shaft and bounce off the ground. The Janesville Fire and Rescue and North Waseca Ambulance will respond with lights and siren. In addition, Mayo Helicopter will land, unless it is called for a real emergency. Hats off to the Waseca Farm Bureau, Debbie Roemhildt and all the volunteers and business for educating and promoting farm safety!
