Happy Tuesday, but also happy “I Love to Write” Day! As someone who does love to write I find this day to be so fun and a reminder that we as humans should write more often.

When doing research, it actually surprises me that this holiday wasn’t created until 2002 by an author called John Riddle, from Delaware. As explained by nationaltoday.com, He wanted a day set aside so that everyone, no matter their age, could spend some time writing. It doesn’t matter what people write, as long as they write what they want to.

He wanted people to do this because “he believes that writing is a very good way for people to express themselves creatively.” Not only this but National Today shares that Writing helps improve our communication skills and practice expressing our ideas better. And writing also helps us process what we’re feeling in a safe way.

With this, I want to share a fun writing activity or two! I know for me, journaling has always helped me with my emotions (especially with my anxiety) as well as a warming way to capture and remember moments. I think in celebration I am going to journal tonight and you can too, but you can also spread the love by doing this:

A couple of ideas came to mind with what I wanted to share. One of them was created “open when...” little letters for a friend or loved one. I had a friend give this to me as a Christmas gift years ago and I still read them now and then because it was so lovely. But if you don’t have time, or don’t know what to write for that, I would simply just write a little thoughtful letter to a friend, partner, or loved one.

Make it as cute, special, and personal as you can with decorations or with words. If you need ideas try some of these prompts:

  • Incredulous “Can you believe we…?”
  • A list of 5 things that you are thankful for about them.
  • Give an update on your life and what is going on
  • Ask them about a memory they have that seems insignificant to anyone else, but they hold special. Then ask about a memory they have of you. Share what memory you hold special about them.
  • What you thought when you first met them?
  • A recipe, book, movie, show, podcast, album, etc. that you’ve been loving. And anything you recommend
  • A list of your top five inside jokes and other things you know will make them laugh
  • Ask them how they are - What have they been learning and growing in?
  • create a collage for them
  • Liner notes for a Spotify playlist you made for them (don’t forget to share the link with them! These notes can include why you chose the songs, what it means to you, why it reminds you of them, what high school crush you immediately think of

There are so many more ideas and if you want any more just google writing prompts to a friend or family member etc.

Then send the physical letter to them in the mail. My friends and I did this over COVID and it honestly made my day seeing a letter from them in the mail, it makes it so much more special than a text.
