Whether you're a fan of snow & winter or not, most of us agree that a little of the white stuff is nice around the holidays. Here's what the chances are of having a White Christmas this year in Southern Minnesota.

Despite the fairly warm and dry fall we had this season, this year's forecast calls for slightly above snowfall for the winter of 2022-2023.

Statistically, Owatonna and the rest of Southern Minnesota have a 61% to 75% chance on average of having a White Christmas.

Minnesota. Maine. Upstate New York. The Allegheny Mountains of Pennsylvania and West Virginia. Practically anywhere in Idaho. And of course, the Rockies or the Sierra Nevada Mountains. These are the parts of the Lower 48* where weather history suggests you want to be if you're looking for the best chance of a white Christmas.

As for the Southern Minnesota forecast, there's a couple of chances of significant snow in the next week -- so that white Christmas is looking pretty good for 2022.

The National Weather Service says that we can expect 3 to 5 inches of new snow Thursday afternoon into Friday morning, with another storm on the horizon around Tuesday of next week.

The average snow fall for Owatonna in December is 12 inches, making it on average our snowiest month of the year. We typically get about 7 more inches in January.
