What to Expect at Minnesota's Oldest County Fair This Summer

When I think of county fairs, the first thing that comes to mind is the food, especially those delicious corn dogs (or pronto pups, depending on the fair!). Then I picture all the farm animals, which is a treat for a city kid like me who doesn't see them every day.

You'll be able to snack on your favorite fair food, check out some animals, and enjoy a variety of entertainment at the oldest county fair in Minnesota, which runs from July 16th to 20th.

The Dodge County Free Fair in Kasson, located about 15 miles west of Rochester, is celebrating its 168th year this summer, making it one year older than the state itself.

Back when it began, fairs were primarily agricultural showcases, with farmers proudly displaying their finest livestock and produce. These early fairs also served as social events with food and beverages, but entertainment wasn't the main draw.

Today, agriculture is still the main focus at county fairs, but entertainment has grown to be a major highlight as well.

The Dodge County Free Fair offers a daily breakfast at the Grandstand Concession from 7:00 AM to 10:00 AM. Visitors can explore a wide variety of exhibits, including Agriculture and 4-H displays.

Unique attractions this year include Pretty Bird Paradise and a daily 2U Entertainment Gaming Trailer featuring Xbox, PlayStation, and Nintendo Switch consoles.

Family & Kid-Friendly Fun at the Dodge County Free Fair

The Little Farmer's Barn is open daily for kids 10 and under (with parent supervision), offering activities like Rubber Duck Races, a Monster Coloring Board, and Bean/Corn Pits.

Other highlights include engaging Chainsaw Carving Shows, a Bean Bag Tournament, classic Bingo, and a free Foam Zone for kids to dance and splash.

Wednesday, July 16th at 7:00 p.m.: Rice Bull Riding Challenge, followed by fireworks.
Thursday, July 17th at 7:00 p.m.: Thunderbird Open Stock Car.
Friday, July 18th at 6:00 p.m.: Auto Cross Races.
Saturday, July 19th at 5:00 p.m.: Dodge Mayhem Trailer Race.
Sunday, July 20th at 2:00 p.m.: DC Championship Demo Derby.
