Cannon Falls, Zumbrota-Mazeppa Baseball Advance

The Cannon Falls Bombers hung on for a 8-5 win over Cotter/Hope Lutheran while Zumbrota-Mazeppa defeated Plainview-Elgin-Millville in Section 1AA Tournament action on Saturday.

The Cannon Falls game was on KDHL.  Cotter featured a very young team with just two seniors on their roster.

The Bombers have eight seniors.

Jaden Winchell, senior, started on the mound, going 5 1/3 innings with 6 hits allowed, 3 runs, 2 earned, 5 strikeouts, 4 walks.  He earned the victory.

Jack Meyers, sophomore, achieved his 4th save, but it was not easy.

Meyers came into the game in the top of the 6th inning with the bases loaded and one out.  He got a strikeout looking and a 0-2 count line out to left field to end the threat but not before the Ramblers scored 2 runs to make the score 6-3.

Cotter/Hope Lutheran scored their first run in the second inning when cleanup hitter Dane Guzzo, freshman, cracked a triple to right field.

Winchell got the next batter to strikeout looking before Luke Schommer, freshman, smacked an RBI double.

Cannon Falls answered in the bottom of the second when Asron Melhouse, junior, got an 0-2 count one out single.

Jackson Eckstrom, junior, followed with a single to right field placing runners at the corner bases.  Nick Barrett, junior, lifted a high fly ball to the outfield scoring Melhouse to tie the game.

The Bombers erupted for four runs in the bottom of the third inning when eight batters went to the plate.  Three hits, a walk and a hit batter led to the runs.

Elliott Nelson, senior, walked to start the inning and went to second base on a wild pitch.  Ari Wells, senior, singled to right placing runners at the corners.

Winchell singled to load the bases.   Preston Schoenfelder entered the game to be the courtesy runner for the pitcher.

Jack Meyers hit a sacrifice fly to giver Cannon Falls a lead they would never relinquish.

Schoenfelder stole second base placing runners at second and third.  Tyler Johnston was hit by a 2-2 count pitch.

Melhouse hit an 0-2 count double scoring three runs.  Cannon Falls led 5-1.

Cotter started Jonathan Going, junior, right-hander on the hill.

Cannon Falls added a run in the 5th inning when Tyler Johnston, senior, clubbed a 2-0 count one out single.  With two outs, Ekstrom hammered a full count RBI single to make the score 6-1.

Going ended his work on the mound after that inning finishing after 5 innings with 7 hits allowed, 6 runs, all earned, 3 strikeouts, 1 walk, 1 hit batsman.  He ended up being charged with the loss.

The Ramblers made things interesting by scoring two runs in the 6th inning which opened with an error on a ball hit by Brett Biesanz, junior.  He ended up at second base.

Guzzo singled scoring Biesanz.  Noah Hodge, sophomore, singled.  Following a strikeout Wesylee Kohner, junior, walked.  James Bublitz, junior, hit an RBI single ending Winchell's day toeing the rubber.

Meyers entered to end the inning.  Winchell finished with 102 pitches, 72 strikes, 5 strikeouts, 4 walks, 3 runs scored, 2 earned runs, 6 hits allowed.

The Bombers scored two runs in the sixth inning.  #9 batter in their order Jon Banks, senior, walked to open the inning against Guzzo, a lefty.

Nelson hammered a single to left center then stole second base to put runners at second and third with no outs.  Wells cracked a 2-2 count two run single.  Score was 8-3.

Cotter/Hope Lutheran made Meyers work by fouling off a lot of his pitches in the top of the 7th.

A pop out started the inning.  Biesanz was walked before Guzzo hit the 7th pitch of his at bat for an RBI single.  The second out was recorded before Schommer hit an 0-1 count RBI single.

Kohner also singled bringing the tying run to the plate.  Meyers struck out the #8 batter in the order and the 7th person to come to the plate.

Meyers finished the game throwing 41 pitches to 9 batters with 28 strikes, allowed 3 hits, struck out 2 batters, walked 1.

Our Cash Wise Foods and Pharmacy Owatonna Delivery of the Game honors were awarded to Wells and Melhouse.  Wells had 2 hits, 2 RBI, scored once in the game.

Melhouse hit a single and double for 2 RBI and scored once.

The Bombers were 4 for 4 in the stolen base department.

#3 seed Cannon Falls is now 17-4 and will compete against #2 seed Dover-Eyota with a 18-3 mark at 6:30 p.m. on Memorial Day,

The game will be broadcast on KDHL, 920 AM, 97.9 FM, FREE KDHL app, beginning approximately 6:15 p.m. if on time.

The game was moved from Hudson Field to Mayo Field and start time moved back an hour to accommodate the other winner's bracket game featuring top seed Zumbrota-Mazeppa and LaCrescent.

They play at Mayo Field beginning 4:00 p.m. Monday.

The Cougars (15-3) got by #8 seed Plainview-Elgin-Millville (9-11).

The Lancers (16-6) stabbed Chatfield (14-6) by a 6-5 score.

The elimination bracket games are also scheduled to be played in Rochester on Memorial Day, but the bracket shows the field "TBD" (to be determined).

Start times are 3:00 p.m. and 5:30 p.m.

Winners of the Elimination bracket games play Tuesday at Mayo Field at 5:00 p.m. and 7:30 p.m.

Winner's Bracket victors Monday advance to the semifinals game at 10:00 a.m. Saturday June 3, 2023.

If Cannon Falls is in that game it would be broadcast on POWER 96 Radio, 95.9 FM and FREE POWER 96 app.
