Area Wrestlers Shine in State Individual Tournament

Four Kenyon-Wanamingo wrestlers qualified to compete at the MSHSL State Wrestling Tournament in St. Paul which concluded Saturday.

Three of them placed in their weight class.  Just one example of the quality from southeast and south-central areas of Minnesota.

Gavin Johnson, junior, Kenyon-Wanamingo placed third at 138 pounds in the Class A individual tournament finishing his junior year with a 32-8 record.

Jaedin Johnson, senior, K-W was 4th at 170 pounds and had a record of 40-6.

Will Van Epps, junior, K-W placed 5th, 37-6 record by gaining a 6-1 decision over Tyler Mix of Dover-Eyota in the 5th place match.  Mix, senior, was 37-11.

Waterville-Elysian-Morristown/Janesville-Waldorf-Pemberton sophomore Keegan Kuball is the 285- pound Class A State Champion.  Kuball had a 41-4 record.  Makota Misgen, senior from New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva placed third in the same weight class.

Brody Murphy, WEM/JWP 106 pounder placed 4th ending his freshman season 41-8.

Medford qualified several wrestlers to participate with two placing.

Tommy Elwood, sophomore, finished 5th at 126 pounds by defeating Gage Bartels, junior from Chatfield,  Elwood ended his year 43-7.  Bartels was 34-10.

Tate Hermes, senior, Medford was 3rd at 170 pounds thanks to a 7-2 win over Jaedin Johnson of K-W.  Hermes ended his season 39-6.

No wrestlers from Faribault placed although five did participate.

There are 14 weight classes in boys, 12 in girls' competition.  Girls does not have multiple classes.  Ladies from big schools and small schools compete against each other.  Notice some girls wrestled a lot and others have trouble finding matches.

South Suburban Conference had 17 wrestlers receive medals including three State Champions!

5 of the 12 girls State Champions were from the area including two from Northfield and two from Shakopee.
