RPU Issues Boil Advisory Following Power Outage in Rochester
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - Rochester Public Utilities has issued a boil order for part of southwest Rochester.
The advisory says a power outage this morning resulted in a loss of pressure in the city’s water system. The outage occurred when a tree fell onto a power line in the southwest quadrant of the city.
Power Outage Led to Loss of Water Pressure
RPU says power to the water system in the affected area was restored within 25 minutes but still required the issuance of a precautionary Boil Water Advisory “in the event that the loss of system pressure near your property could have allowed backflow to enter our drinking water distribution system.” The concern is that the water system could have been contaminated by harmful bacteria.

The advisory indicates the boil order only involves customers within the Willow Heights High Level pressure zone. The area is defined in the map below.
A news release states that RPU is currently conducting testing on the water in the affected area and expects to have the results within 24 hours.
Power Outage Led to Loss of Water Pressure
Anyone in the affected area has been advised to bring all drinking water to a full rolling boil for at least one minute, then allow it to cool before consuming. RPU says boiled or bottled water should be used for “drinking, making ice, brushing teeth, and food preparation until further notice.”
The advisory also recommends that affected customers flush their building plumbing systems once water pressure is restored and the boil order is lifted.
