St. Peter, MN (KROC-AM News) - Authorities are investigating a fatal incident at a state-operated mental health facility in St. Peter.

A news release from the Minnesota Department of Human Services says a patient died yesterday after an assault by another patient at the Forensic Mental Health Program North Campus, which is part of what was formerly known as the Minnesota Security Hospital. The attack occurred around 1 AM Monday.

The statement says law enforcement officers and emergency responders were called to the scene and the assault victim was transported to a hospital where he died. The patient responsible for the assault was taken into custody without incident.

“This tragic incident has left our patients and staff badly shaken,” said Human Services Commissioner Jodi Harpstead. “Our thoughts now are with the victim’s family and friends who have suffered a terrible loss. “We are cooperating with law enforcement and have begun our own internal review. Due to data privacy laws, we cannot release the names of either patient.”

The DHS news release says the Forensic Mental Health Program primarily serves patients who have been civilly committed as mentally ill and dangerous. It is housed in two locations in St. Peter. The main facility is part of the upper campus of the St. Peter Regional Treatment Center.
