Current Rochester Fire Chief Eric Kerska earlier announced his intention to retire in January of 2025. The city began searching for Chief Kerska's successor in April.
Chief Kerska became a member of the Rochester Fire Department in 1994. After rising through the ranks, Kerska took over as Fire Chief in 2018.

The Rochester City Council took official action to name Chief Kerska’s replacement Monday night.
Earlier this month, the Rochester Fire Civil Service Commission voted to approve adding the West Allis, Wisconsin Fire Chief Mason Pooler to the Fire Chief Eligibility Register.
Pooler was the only person named to that list, making him the commission’s choice to be Chief Kreska’s successor.
Pooler has served as the Fire Chief in West Allis, near Milwaukee, since 2017. He has been a firefighter since 1998, when he joined the Germantown, Wisconsin Fire Department.
He later served as a firefighter in Merrill, Wisconsin before moving to West Allis in 2002.
“I’m grateful to have gotten the vote of approval from the Fire Civil Service Commission and City Council,” Pooler said in a statement issued by the city. “I take this appointment to heart and pledge to serve with integrity and honor. I look forward to working collaboratively with the Rochester Fire Department, City Partners and the greater Rochester Community.”
