Stillwater, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Washington County Attorney's Office has lodged a first-degree assault charge against an inmate at the Oak Park Heights State Prison.

36-year-old Dominique Jefferson is accused of punching a female correctional sergeant in the face with a closed fist after she ordered him to return to his cell on the morning of January 15. The criminal complaint says the sergeant was transported to Regions Hospital where she was treated for significant damage to her right eye and numerous facial fractures. A news release issued by the Washington County Attorney says "the injuries sustained from the attack caused irreparable damage and resulted in the permanent loss of vision in her right eye."

The charges say the assault on the corrections sergeant occurred shortly after Jefferson requested to speak with a member of the prison crisis intervention. After he refused to comply with her order, Jefferson removed a clear plastic mouthguard from his pants pocket, placed it in his mouth, and told the sergeant to "ring the bell" and then stated, "I been waiting for you." The complaint says Jefferson continued to verbally assault and threatened the Sergeant and other correctional officers after he was restrained.

Jefferson has been in the state prison system since 2005. He is serving a sentence for aiding and abetting second-degree murder.

The Washington County Attorney's Office noted the charges were filed in this case after three separate attacks on correctional staff at Oak Park Heights and Stillwater State Prisons last week. Those incidents sent five correctional officers to hospitals for treatment of injuries.
