FBI Assisting Plainview Police Investigating School Threat

Plainview, MN (KROC-AM News) - The Plainview Police Department is investigating an alleged threat of violence involving a school building in the Wabasha County community.

A news release says officers responded to the Plainview-Elgin-Millville 7-8th grade Building in Elgin this morning after learning of a message threatening violence that was sent from an unknown Snapchat account. The Wabasha County Sheriff's Office and the Minnesota State Patrol also responded to the incident.

Plainview police reported that students and staff at the school were searched before entering, and the lockers inside the school and the school grounds were also searched. The news release says officers were also stationed at the 4-6th grade building in Elgin, and at the elementary and high school campus and Plainview as a precaution.

The news release states that, although there is not an imminent threat of violence, Plainview police are asking the community to remain vigilant.

The case is under investigation with assistance from the FBI and the Minnesota Bureau of Criminal Apprehension. The state law enforcement agency says there has been an increase, over the past 24 hours, of reports regarding Snapchat posts about future shootings in schools throughout Minnesota.

According to Plainview police, the BCA have proven nearly all of the threats to be hoaxes, but also note the threats cannot be discounted, and all possible steps are being undertaken to identify the origin of the threat.
