Charges – Rochester Predatory Offender Caught With Child Porn
Rochester, MN (KROC-AM News) - A child pornography investigation by the Rochester Police Department has resulted in charges against a convicted sex offender.
The criminal complaint filed Friday against 37-year-old Derek Thomas Jeter indicates the investigation began in early July when Rochester police received cybertips involving a dozen files of suspected child sexual abuse material that had the been uploaded to Amazon photos. The court document says the IP address was associated with a residence on Northern Valley Drive in Rochester.
The charges state that detectives learned that Jeter, who had previously been categorized by the court as a Level 3 predatory offender, had previously registered the home as his address. Police then obtained a search warrant for the home, Jeter, and some vehicles that resulted in the seizure of two cell phones and four electronic devices.
According to the criminal complaint, investigators found nearly 3 dozen images considered child sexual abuse material stored in the Amazon account associated with Jeter. It says the children depicted in the sexually explicit images are as young as 7-9 years old.
Jeter is facing two counts of possession of child pornography. His bail was set at $30,000 and he has been ordered to return to court later this week.
Court records show Jeter has previous convictions for felony criminal sexual conduct and possession of child pornography as a predatory offender. His 2007 conviction for third-degree criminal sexual conduct involving a 15-year-old girl originally resulted in a three month jail sentence, but he was later ordered to serve an 18 month prison sentence after violating the terms of his probation.
He was convicted of the child pornography charge in 2012 and received a 45 month prison sentence.
