A Minnesota police department is using its patented humor to try and solve a crime that stinks, literally. The Wyoming Police Department is looking for the culprit or culprits who are leaving carp at a boat landing and along a road, which is illegal, in case you were curious, as it would be seen as littering and or wasting a fish.

The case at hand:

The Wyoming Police Department, which often wins the day on social media, especially on April 20th, posted about the fish crime, and it included plenty of puns.

We’ve got a fishy situation on our hands — and trust us, it stinks.

Over the past few weeks, someone has been illegally dumping dead carp at the Comfort Lake boat landing and along Pioneer Road. Aside from violating environmental rules and basic common sense, it’s creating a stench so strong it might qualify as a biological weapon.

If you’ve seen anything suspicious (or smelled it from miles away), please help us catch the carp culprit(s). Whether it’s a tip, a trail of scales, or a suspect with suspiciously fishy hands, we want to hear from you.

This isn’t your average fish tale — it’s an ongoing investigation, and we’re reeling in leads.

Call our non-emergency line at 651-257-4100 or send us a message here. Let’s work together to keep our community clean and, preferably, less odoriferous.

Is leaving a fish behind a crime in MN?

A Google search of leaving a fish at a boat launch was a crime turned up this result:

If you catch a fish (including rough fish) and you don’t intend to use it for anything, you must return it immediately back into the water alive. You can’t waste a fish by discarding it, or any part of it, on the ice, on the bank, or into the water.

The answer was then linked to these Minnesota statutes.

Great reminder with the opener a few weeks away

While it's a silly crime to be investigating, it is a great reminder with the opener being a few weeks away, make sure you are discarding bait and fish waste properly, and be sure to clean your boat from any weeds or other aquatic hitchhikers when you take your boat out of the water.
