Largest Airline At MSP Pushes New Flight Attendant Underwear Policy
Whenever you travel through the Minneapolis-St. Paul Airport (MSP), it's very clear that one airline dominates the area.
That airline, of course, would be Delta Airlines, and it's the largest global carrier at MSP, operating nearly 350 departures per day to 125 destinations worldwide, including nonstop flights to popular international destinations.
I admit, I'm loyal to Delta and will book my trips with them whenever possible. I would assume that an airline that is popular with travelers would also be an airline that a lot of people would want to work for. That seems to be the case as 100,000 people are working on the Delta team.
However, it's not current Delta team members that recently made headlines, it's actually a new policy that was put in place for potential new employees applying to be flight attendants.
Delta Airlines Makes Headlines With New, Written Underwear Policy
Recently, Delta Airlines released a two-page memo for “appearance requirements” for future hires that outlines appearance guidelines starting with the interview process and continuing throughout their career with the airline.
A lot of it is basic, common-sense stuff. For example, when it comes to the day of the interview, the following things are not allowed:
- Profanity
- Chewing gum
- Use of phones and earbuds
There are also grooming stipulations for Delta flight attendants that include:
- Personal cleanliness and hygiene must always be maintained.
- Aftershave, cologne, and perfume may be used if applied lightly.
- Eyelashes should appear natural avoiding extreme length and volume.
- Facial hair must be trimmed and neatly maintained.
- Fingernails must be clean, neat, trimmed, and, if polished, chip-free. All nails must be the same color. No neon colors, multi-color, adornments, glitter, hand-painted designs, or airbrushed nails permitted.
- Visible tattoos are not permitted and must be covered by clothing or waterproof make-up.
- Bandages are not suitable for coverage of tattoos at any time.

None of that, or the other categories on the memo drew much attention except for one big exception: CLOTHING.
Delta has now written the following at the top of their clothing guidelines: 'Proper undergarments must be worn but must not be visible.'
That one sentence is making headlines everywhere. Usually, a policy is put in place based on something that happened previously, so you'll forgive me if my mind is really wandering here.
A Delta spokesperson has since told the New York Post that it was the desire for transparency and clarity that the underwear rule was clearly written out. They added that the airline encourages people to ‘dress for success’ and give a great first impression.
I guess it's fine by me that flight attendants have to wear underwear, not that I'd care either way, and I'll keep flying Delta as long as they don't pass on that same requirement to their passengers, like me.
