The Duluth Salvation Army has sent out a plea to the community for help this holiday season.

Red Kettle Season Off To Slow Start

The Red Kettle season is the Salvation Army's biggest fundraiser of the year. Money raised during the holiday season helps out families during Christmas time, and it also helps out families all year long.

Community Engagement Director Cyndi Lewis shared sobering news on December 2nd,

After being gone for a week on vacation, I came back to some very somber faces in the office. In the past week, we had a lot of bell ringer cancellations due to the cold weather, and when there is already a shortage of ringers, that deficit equates to a somber start and outlook for our $250,000 goal.

Currently at 1/5th of Goal

With 20 days left in the red kettle season, the Salvation Army is only at 1/5th of their $250,000 goal. Last year was a slow start to the fundraiser as well. If you feel like you've not seen as many ringers out in the community it isn't by chance. Volunteer numbers have continued to slide since the pandemic.

How you can help by volunteering

You can sign up to ring a bell at the many Red Kettle locations across Duluth, Superior, and Hermantown. Register online and registertoring.com. Enter your zip code to find places nearby.

Many of the bell ringer locations are in heated areas, so you don't have to worry about the cold weather.

The Salvation Army is also looking for volunteers at the gift wrap booth at the Miller Hill Mall and also at the Christmas Distribution. To volunteer for either of those, calls the office main number at 218-722-7934.

We need $10,000 donation days every day leading up to Christmas.

In order for the Salvation Army to hit their goal, they would need to raise $10,000 a day for the rest of the Red Kettle Season. More money is raised when volunteers are ringing bells, volunteer now.
