Zumbrota Farmers Protest Proposed Hog Farm
People of Zumbrota, residents and farmers alike, protested at the Minnesota Pollution Control Agency headquarters in St. Paul. They claim the agency released inaccurate reviews of the possible environmental impacts of what they call a factory hog farm in the area.
The MPCA has signed off on the environmental sheet despite efforts to stop the project. The proposed farm, with 4,700 hogs and a 12-foot deep manure pit, should not have any significant environmental effects, according to the MPCA.
Residents claim that air and water could be harmed and lead to smells they cannot get away from. They also say that what they call factory farms take a toll on the local economy, and put family farms out of business, in addition to the pollution issues.
The residents now say they will take their fight to Goodhue County officials.
