Wagner drops 53; NRHEG rolls

MINNEAPOLIS–Led by Carlie Wagner’s State Tournament record 53 points, New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva beat Pequot Lakes, 100-68, Wednesday at Mariucci Arena in the Class AA quarterfinals.  Wagner broke her record of 50 points, which was set in last year’s State AA title game against Braham.

The Panthers struggled from the field early and were hampered with foul trouble as senior post Paige Overgaard picked up her fourth foul with 7:27 to go in the first half.  NRHEG led by 2 with 1:47 to go in the 1st, but went on 9-2 run to close out the half with a 50-41 lead.

Then Carlie took over.

The University of Minnesota recruit, playing across the street from where she will play college basketball next fall, scored 8 points early in the second half and she and her Panthers teammates never looked back, outscoring the Patriots 50-27 in the second half.  NRHEG also set a State record for most points in a game (100), and most 3-pointers as a team (13).  NRHEG will play No. 4 Howard Lake-Waverly-Winsted on Friday at 6PM at Williams Arena on Kat Kountry 104.9 FM.

Wagner is just 9 points shy of passing Minneapolis South’s Tayler Hill (3,888) for second all-time in scoring among Minnesota girls basketball players.  She has scored an incredible 294 points in 7 State Tournament games dating back to 2012.

NRHEG scoring: Carlie Wagner 53, Jade Schultz 17, Maddie Wagner 11, Marnie Wagner 7, Paige Overgaard 6, Hannah Lundberg 2, Anna Stork 2, Kelli Harrington 2. Halftime: NRHEG 50, Pequot Lakes 41.

Student fan buses for grades 6-12 will leave at 2:00 Friday. Sign up in the high school office. There are no presale tickets for the remaining games.
