Farmington defeated Owatonna 3-2 in a back-and-forth first-round volleyball match in the Section 1AAA playoffs Wednesday night in Farmington. The Huskies grabbed the first set 25-22. The Tigers won the next two 25-12, 25-23. OHS dominated the fourth 25-23. Farmington jumped out to a big lead early in the fifth set, winning it 15-11.

That ends Owatonna's season at 11-17. The Huskies eight seniors include Sydney Mullenbach, Madelyn Kuck, Sydney Schultz, Lexi Kunkel, Olivia Spatenka, Ahnna Stelter, Alexa Sommers and Erin Peterson.

Farmington has had the upper hand between the two schools recently, with playoff wins over both OHS soccer teams this fall, in addition to wins last spring in softball and girls lacrosse.

The other first round results show Faribault 3-0 over Albert Lea, Rochester Mayo swept Austin 3-0 and John Marshall blanked Winona 3-0. Friday's semifinals will feature Farmington at Lakeville North, Faribault at Century on Power 96, Mayo at Northfield and John Marshall at Lakeville South.

Thursday's volleyball playoff schedule includes Section 1A, West Subsection quarterfinals with Blooming Prairie at Grand Meadow, Lyle-Pacelli at Hayfield, Randolph at Bethlehem Academy and Goodhue at Medford.

In Section 2A, South Subsection play NRHEG goes to Alden-Conger, Lake Crystal-Welcome Memorial is at St. Clair, Madelia plays at Martin County West and Martin Luther / GHECT travels to Waterville-Elysian-Morristown.

Triton opens play in Section 1AA, West Subsection by playing at top-seed Stewartville, Zumbrota-Mazeppa is at Byron, Pine Island plays at Kasson-Mantorville on KDHL AM 920 and Rochester Lourdes goes to Cannon Falls.
