Thursday, Oct. 22, Don Overlie and Mary Ann Higgins were in for Talk of the Town at the KRFO studios to talk about the Toys For Tots Campaign. The U.S. Marines-based program began in 1947 and has been in Steele County for more than 30 years.

Assistant coordinator Overlie tells us that last year more than 500 families, more than 1,200 children up to age 15, from Steele County and parts of Waseca and Dodge County were helped with Toys For Tots.

  • Steele County Clothesline/Food Shelf/Human Services/Public Health
  • Salvation Army
  • Churches in Steele County
  • Owatonna Workforce
  • Big Brothers/Big Sisters of Southern MN
  • Owatonna and Blooming Prairie Public Libraries
  • Ellendale Post Office (8-11:30AM, 12:30-3PM M-F)
  • Medford City Hall (7:30-4PM Lunch 11:30-12:30 M-F)

Volunteer coordinator Higgins is asking for volunteers to shop Thanksgiving evening. She is also asking for volunteers to set up for distribution and for the distribution days December 17-19, which would be Thursday, Friday and Saturday. Call Mary Ann at (507) 363-6911and leave a message.

The distribution is in a new location this year because the Armory is under construction. This year it will take place at Trinity Lutheran Church, 609 S. Lincoln, in Owatonna.

Overlie also mentions that corporate sponsor Toys R Us has given the office grant money and will be taking students from Owatonna's ALC, Alternative Learning Center, to Rochester to shop.

In the past, each child has received a toy or two, books and games. It does depend on what the campaign receives as to what is given.
