Talk of the Town: Medford Mayor and Superintendent

Medford Mayor Lois Nelson and School Superintendent Rich Dahman stopped in for KRFOs Talk of the Town on Wednesday.

Dahman mentioned that prom will be on Saturday, May 7, and it will be taking place in Fairbault with the after-prom part at the Medford School.

Then on Thursday, May 12, students will be presented with academic awards during the day. Graduation will be on Friday, May 27, at 7PM with the last day of school on Thursday, June 2.

The elementary students will have a track and field day. Third-, fourth-, fifth- and sixth-graders on Friday the 13th and kindergarten, first- and second-graders will be later on Friday the 27th.

Dahman congratulates senior Matt Swanson for placing first in the state creative speech competition in April. He also mentioned that speech coach and English teacher Kim Goblirsch was named coach of the year for speech. Dahman also noted that Medford's Student Council was given the National Gold of Excellence Award.

Medford Mayor Lois Nelson said that on Tuesday, May 10, the council will meet with architects from Mankato and the fire department to discuss the design of the new regional center to include the fire department and multipurpose room for the community, which will be located on the old school property purchased in 2009. The cost of the building will be about $3.1 million. The designing phase continues with the hope to accommodate newer and longer fire and pumper trucks.

Nelson mentioned that representatives have put in for a bonding request in the legislature to help build it.

Nelson, Owatonna Mayor Tom Kuntz and Blooming Prairie Mayor H. Peterson attended the mayor conference in the cities. Peterson was named next year's president of the Mayors Association.

Medford Public Works has hired Fernando Hernandez, Scott Prestegard and Jed Peterson. Peterson and his family are relocating from Utah. His wife is from the area.

The mayor also gave an update on the Medford's veteran memorial at County Road 12 and Third Street Northeast. After three years and $80,000, only finishing touches are left and a dedication will be soon.
