Huskies girls lacrosse coach Bill Bernard says defense has been the story of the 6-0 start of the season. The team faces their biggest Big Nine challenge Thursday at home versus Mayo.

At the time of the KRFO coach show recording, Bernard said Owatonna led the state in goals against. The team went out and beat Rochester JM 13-3 afterward to continue their stingy defensive effort. OHS has surrendered just 11 goals in six games. Bernard said, "They're playing the ultimate team defense." He added, "Maddie Seykora, our goalie, is doing a good job. Gabi Zeman, she's a four-year starter, she's a captain for us. She's a senior. She is the glue that makes a lot of it work."

Bernard said a factor in holding down the opponents score is the Huskies are not giving up quality scoring chances.

The biggest test of the Big Nine season will likely come Thursday night at 7PM as the Huskies host Rochester Mayo. Both teams are 4-0 in the league and will also square off on May 16 at Mayo. Owatonna is averaging nearly 14 goals per game while giving up fewer than two. The Spartans are scoring eight goals per game and giving up seven.
