Stream Trout Fishing Opener Looks Good for Southern Minnesota

The early spring weather and stocking operations by the Minnesota Department of Natural Resources should make for a strong trout stream opener for anglers Saturday, April 15.

The Minnesota DNR reports that good fishing conditions should exist across the state for Saturday's stream trout season opener. Brian Nerbonne, DNR stream habitat consultant says, "Trout fishing is getting more and more popular in Minnesota and there are quality trout fishing opportunites in every region of the state."

In southeastern Minnesota, recent mild winters and the early start to spring this year should lead to good opportunities. The DNR indicates that the lack of spring flooding has led to good reproduction for trout. Read more about trout fishing and find out how to get your license.

The DNR has recently stocked rainbow and brown trout in five counties across southwestern Minnesota. Areas stocked include Fort Ridgely Creek in Renville County, Spring Creek in Brown County, Ramsey Creek in Redwood County, Scheldorf Creek in Cottonwood County, and Redwood River in Lyon County, according to a press release.

Minnesota has nearly 4,000 miles of trout streams. Angers must have a trout fishing validation on their fishing license. Find a map here of trout fishing opportunities. Remember that the water is still very cold early and be sure to ask permission of landowners if there is any question about access.
