The first murder trial ever held in Steele County took place in 1860. A 35-year-old German named Henry Kreigler supposedly abused his wife, causing her to flee to a neighbor. Kreigler was then accused of murdering that neighbor in Freeborn County. Kreigler was tried in Steele County on a change of venue. Without giving out too much information, the Kreigler trial and the outcome led to a first in this part of the state.

The Steele County Historical Society offers more information on this man who exhibited strange behavior during his incarceration and his trial at the next edition of "History Uncorked."
