The latest sports season for Special Olympics started out with a few bumps in the road. Due to changes at the State level for the entire program the swimming and basketball seasons were moved to coincide with the Summer State Games, traditionally the same time as track and field. This led to some rearranging of schedules, as well as not being able to have a basketball team this year with Owatonna Area Special Olympics. Mother Nature did not cooperate with us very well, we had to cancel a few practices because we could not get on to the track, anyone else remember the April snows? Construction at Owatonna Middle School meant we had to move swim practices to another location, but, we made it through.

There were a lot of medals being won, and a HUGE THANK YOU to all of the volunteers, the University of St. Thomas for hosting the event, and all of the law enforcement personnel who were there directing traffic and part of the Torch Run. Without all of them and countless others, there would be no State Games.

This weekend was a great weekend for all of the athletes that participate. New friends were made, and old friends reconnected. I can't wait to do it all again next time. We are proud to be a MN Special Olympics family.
