The high school hockey season arrives in Owatonna Tuesday as the Owatonna girls open their home schedule at 7PM with coverage on KRFO AM1390. OHS (1-0) hosts Rochester Century (0-1) at the Four Seasons Centre.
The Steele County Blades junior hockey team scored a pair of wins over the weekend at the Four Seasons Centre in Owatonna, beating Hudson 6-4 and the Minnesota Mullets 3-2 in a shootout. The Blades are 5-2 over their last seven games.
Owatonna Senior quarterback Abe Havelka set school records with seven touchdown passes and 451 yards in Saturday's 56-38 semifinal victory over Brainerd at U.S. Bank Stadium. The Huskies will play Elk River in the Prep Bowl Saturday, November 25 at 4PM.
In a rematch of the 2013 Prep Bowl championship game held at the Metrodome, Owatonna and Brainerd will clash in the semifinals Saturday, November 18 at U.S. Bank Stadium. While the players are all different, the coaching staffs and schemes remain mostly the same.
Owatonna junior Allison An achieved her goal of advancing to the finals of the Class AA diving meet at the University of Minnesota Aquatic Center. She is in ninth place after two rounds on Thursday. The finals are Saturday at 6PM.
Owatonna High School has an experienced coaching staff leading their football team into the state semifinals Saturday night at U.S. Bank Stadium. But their years of working together pales in comparison to the group that will line up across from them for the second time in five years.
Eight Owatonna football players were named to the Big Southeast All-District team, including the Offensive Player of the Year. Four others earned a spot on the honorable mention team. Junior Jason Williamson landed the top offensive honor for the Red Division after racing for nearly 2,000 yards.
This is the second straight year that Owatonna junior Ali An has qualified for the state diving meet. This year she is focused on making the finals after mainly having fun and getting feel for the event in 2016, "My sophomore year I mainly focused on having fun. So maybe this year I'll do better, because I have experience with it."
Every year Owatonna High School holds a Cash Drive to raise money for a good cause. Last year over $7,000 was raised for Hope of Haiti, which works toward clean water. The Magnet, Owatonna student news organization, reports money will benefit a Houston-area high school affected by Hurricane Harvey in Dickinson, TX.
