U.S. Sen. Al Franken, D-Minn., is inviting Minnesota students to participate in his fifth annual poetry contest with the theme "Celebrating the Veteran in My Life." April is Month of the Military Child and National Poetry Month.

Minnesota students may celebrate veterans and active military members that could include relatives, friends of the family or a neighbor with a positive impact on their lives, according to a press release.

The poetry contest is open to all school-age students. Winners will be selected in three age categories:

  • kindergarten to fifth grade
  • sixth to eighth grade
  • freshman to seniors

A reception, with special guests, will be held at Franken's St. Paul office for those selected in each age category. The winning poems will be framed and put on display in his office in St. Paul or Washington, D.C.

If you know anyone who would like to participate in Franken's poetry contest, submit poems by April 19, 2016, by email or mail to Office of Sen. Al Franken, c/o Poetry Contest, 60 Plato Blvd. E., Suite 220, St. Paul, MN 55107.
