Owatonna junior Chloe Schmidt scored three first period goals and added a fourth late in the Huskies' 6-2 girls' hockey win at Rochester John Marshall Thursday. OHS extended its unbeaten streak to six games as they enter the final week of the regular season.

Schmidt started the scoring 5:01 into the game on a rebound off an Anna Herzog assist. Sarah Snitker appeared to have the shot that set up the play in front of the net. JM answered 42 seconds later as Ally Halverson netted her 29th goal of the season.

Less than a minute later Schmidt scored again with an amazing backhand shot that went over the goalie's right shoulder into the top corner of the net and seemed to ring off the crossbar and far post in. It was unassisted and came at 6:26.

Less than two minutes later Schmidt scored on the power play with assists to Kiley Friedrichs and Herzog. Halverson scored again for the Rockets with 14 seconds to go in the first period, leaving Owatonna up 3-2 at the break.

Owatonna scored the only goal of the second period. Ezra Oien notched her 12th at 4:37 from Maylynn Prokopec. Madelyn Simon made a nice play near the blue line to get the puck into scoring position.

Oien added another goal at 8:14 of the third from Sydney Hunst and Prokopec for a 5-2 lead. Schmidt ended the scoring at 16:13 with her fourth of the night and ninth of the season. She was named the KRFO/TPS Insurance Player of the Game. Owatonna out shot the Rockets 48-22 according to the Hockey Hub score sheet. Ava Wolfe earned the win in goal for OHS with 20 saves. JM's Anysia Heimer made 42 saves, including several great stops to keep the score respectable and stopped a penalty shot.

Owatonna's Olivia Herzog was awarded the penalty shot while being held on a breakaway with 7:14 remaining in the third. Heimer sprinted to the hash marks and cut down the angle when Herzog cut to her right on the attempt. Heimer kicked out her foot to make the stop. The JM coach took exception to the penalty shot call and was removed from the bench a short time later after an exchange with an official.

The Huskies moved into second place in the Big Nine Conference with the win, edging ahead of Faribault. Owatonna (11-9-2, 10-3-2) closes the season with home games against Austin Tuesday and Northfield Thursday, January 31.

Coach Sarah Murray says the team would love to spoil the Raiders unbeaten conference season. There is also the possibility those two could meet in the first round of the sections Wednesday, February 6.

A win in one of the final two games would also guarantee Owatonna their 11th straight season with a winning record.
