Saturday was a Tough Day for Owatonna High School Teams

Owatonna High School came up short in several sports Saturday as the wrestlers lost at Albert Lea, the basketball teams dropped games to John Marshall and the girls hockey team lost its finale.

On the wrestling mat at a packed Albert Lea gym, the Tigers clinched the Big Nine title with a 41-22 victory over OHS. The Tigers (9-0 in conference duals) still have to face Rochester Mayo but can finish in no worse than a tie for the conference title. Owatonna (8-1) closes the regular season at Faribault on Friday, February 5, after competing at Stillwater on Thursday. On Saturday, Albert Lea jumped out to a 28-4 lead with four pins and a major decision in the lighter weights.

The Owatonna girls hockey team dropped a 2-1 decision at Faribault to wrap the regular season. Section seedings will be determined Sunday, with the playoffs to begin Wednesday. Section 1A has four top-20 teams with Red Wing, Owatonna, Northfield and Faribault all ranked.

OHS girls basketball lost at Rochester JM on Saturday 66-57. Jamie Ruden led the Rockets with 31 points. Syd Schultz scored 21 for OHS. The Huskies host Winona on Tuesday, pending the outcome of the predicted blizzard.

The Owatonna boys basketball team lost to JM at the OHS gym 87-54. The Hurt brothers for the Rockets combined for 47 points. Alex Emanuelson scored 14 for Owatonna. Mason Thein and Tyshawn Bryant each added 12. The Huskies go to Winona on Tuesday, again, weather permitting.
