Report Says Full-Service Hospital Would be Viable in Albert Lea

Albert Lea, MN (KROC AM News) - A group that is trying to keep a full-service hospital operating in Albert Lea has released a report that says it is a viable option.

The group Save Our Hospital was formed earlier this year after Mayo Clinic announced it was moving many of its inpatient services in Albert Lea to its Austin campus.

The group partnered with Freeborn County and Albert Lea to pay for the study that resulted in the report that was released to the public Tuesday evening. The SOH group says the report “shows that another entity could operate the hospital in a different, more cost-effective manner, and would be profitable to at least $4.4 million annually. “ The group added, “ This encouraging report signals to medical providers in the Midwest to come to Albert Lea, because not only is the county  designated  as a Health Professional Shortage Area but also patients would be extremely welcoming of a better performing organization.”

SOH says elected and community leaders recognize the need for a second provider to serve Freeborn County. One is State Senator Dan Sparks, who represents the Albert Lea area.

SOH released this statement from Sparks; “On behalf of my constituents served by Albert Lea’s hospital and in light of the Quorum report, I support community efforts to bring an alternative provider to Albert Lea. I will work with my colleagues in the Minnesota Senate to ensure any legislative roadblocks are lifted. I also believe competition is sorely needed in Southeastern Minnesota’s health care market, and patients could receive high-quality health  care at lower prices with another provider.”
