Owatonna High School graduate, and future University of Minnesota golfer, Peter Jones has qualified for the U.S. Amateur Tournament with a first place showing at a Minnesota event.

Jones shot a 73 Tuesday to follow up his 75 from Monday at Decotah Ridge Golf Club in Morton and captured medalist honors with his 148. The total was four over par. He finished two strokes in front of a group of four golfers. After a two-hole playoff, Hudson Carpenter of Stillwater and Freddy Thomas of Lakeville captured the other two qualifying spots. All three advance to the national tournament. The U. S. Amateur Championships are August 17-23 in Olympia Fields, Illinois.

Jones started on the back nine Tuesday and birdied the par-3 11th hole. He followed that up with six straight pars.

Jones played in the U.S. Junior Amateur Championship in 2014 and carded 147, advancing to match play. He lost in the Round of 64 portion of the tournament.

Jones finished second in the Minnesota State High School League tournament in June, the second runner-up finish of his prep career.
