Owatonna Wrestlers Secure Big Nine Conference Championship

With their triangular sweep on Thursday at Mankato, the Owatonna wrestlers improved to 9-0 in conference action to secure a Big Nine title. It's their 23rd overall crown.

The Huskies beat Mankato East 54-17 and Rochester Century 64-15. The only conference dual remaining is February 9 against Faribault at the Owatonna gym. It's Owatonna's third title in the past five years. Albert Lea won the last two conference championships. The Huskies and Tigers have dominated the league over the past two decades, winning all the titles over that time. The two schools have combined to win the Big Nine 52 times. Albert Lea has 29 titles.

The No. 6AAA Huskies compete at the Kennedy Duals in Bloomington on Saturday at 9AM. Radio coverage begins with the 11AM round. Ranked teams Hastings and Zumbrota-Mazeppa are in the field. OHS goes to No. 1AA Kasson-Mantorville on Friday, February 3.

Owatonna girls hockey stayed unbeaten in the Big Nine at 12-0-2 with a 6-1 victory over Mankato East on Thursday. Five players scored for Owatonna, who netted four goals in the second period. OHS hosts "Skate for a Cure" cancer fundraising night Saturday at 7:30PM versus conference and section rival Northfield. The teams tied 1-1 in their earlier game.

OHS boys hockey dropped a 4-1 decision at Mankato East. The Huskies scored first, but the Cougars put in three in the third period to pull away. Owatonna plays at conference-leading Northfield on Tuesday on KRFO AM 1390.

The Huskies gymnastics kept their winning streak going with a strong performance at Northfield, scoring 147.225 and winning by more than 10 points. Owatonna goes to Rochester on Tuesday for a makeup and finishes their regular season Thursday hosting Faribault.

Owatonna's boys basketball team extended its winning streak to seven games with a 73-57 triumph at Red Wing in a makeup game. Dalton Kubista scored 22. Nolan Malo had 18. OHS goes to Albert Lea on Friday night on KRFO AM 1390. The OHS girls host Albert Lea on Kat Kountry 105FM Friday for their "Coaches versus Cancer" night.

The OHS boys swimmers lost to Faribault on Thursday 96-85.
