The Owatonna High School girls soccer team made a section statement with a 1-0 overtime victory over Lakeville South Saturday. Jordan Whalen scored the winner with the assist from Tatum Walkingstick. Emilee Zirngible earned the shutout. OHS goes to Red Wing Tuesday, September 18.

The OHS boys stayed alone atop the Big Nine Conference standings with a 6-2 win at Northfield. Jack Hanson scored twice as the Huskies improved to 5-0 in the league and 6-1-1 overall.

After the Raiders had a couple of chances early, Zach Barrett headed a ball into the goal to open the scoring with about 25:30 remaining in the first half. Hanson scored about ten minutes later, but Northfield answered a minute later to trim the Huskies' lead to 2-1. Asad Ali put the Huskies up 3-1 with under eight minutes to go in the half.

About 15 minutes into the second half, Hanson scored his second goal after a long clearing kick from keeper Cody Bussert to make it 4-1. Owatonna missed a penalty kick right after that. Northfield picked up a red card midway through the second half, forcing them to continue a player down for the balance of the match but they scored with ten minutes left.

Derek Huxford and Lane Versteeg added goals for the 6-2 final. OHS hosts Red Wing Tuesday, September 18 at 7 pm at the Lincoln Soccer Complex.

Owatonna's girls tennis team won the Rochester John Marshall Tournament Saturday. They beat Lake City 6-1, Robbinsdale Armstrong 5-2 and Cretin-Durham Hall 6-1 to improve to 12-3 for the season. The Huskies are off until Saturday, September 22 when they play at Litchfield.
