What goes up must come down. A puck that seemed to deflect off the ceiling proved to be the game winner for Duluth Denfeld in a 4-3 victory over the Owatonna boys Tuesday.

A Denfeld player blasted a puck from the blue line midway through the third period. It rocketed off an Owatonna player into the rafters and came down at a sharp angle into the net behind Huskies goalie Jacob Dub. Two on-ice officials looked at each other then one pointed toward the net indicating a goal. Owatonna coach Josh Storm questioned the call and an Owatonna coach in the crowd said he heard it deflect off a rafter, however the goal counted and Denfeld had a 4-2 lead. The Hunters won the consolation semifinal 4-3 over the Huskies (5-5), who have back-to-back one-goal losses and will face Mankato West (7-6) in the seventh place game at 9AM Wednesday on KRFO AM 1390. The Scarlets lost to Apple Valley 4-1 Tuesday.

Mitchell Mayer had two goals for Owatonna. He scored the only OHS goal in a 2-1 overtime loss on Monday against Hudson, Wis. Kade Friedrichs had a goal and an assist. Tyler Wencl and Noah Scheid each had two assists. Two OHS goals came on the power play. The teams traded goals in the second period and early in the third until the fortunate bounce that gave Denfeld a little breathing room. Denfeld had a 22-18 advantage in shots, but overall the Huskies played toe-to-toe with the No. 15A-ranked Hunters.

The Owatonna girls hockey team opened play at the Schwan Cup with a 3-1 loss to No. 20A Moose Lake. The No. 15A-rated Huskies went 0-for-4 on breakaways. Coach Tim Hunst indicated in a text message the team "played well enough to win." OHS (10-4) plays Marshall at noon Wednesday at the Super Rink in Blaine. The tournament wraps up on Thursday.
