Owatonna Hands Faribault Girls Hockey their First Loss

Faribault Falcons head coach Ali Miller told Power 96 before their game with the Owatonna Huskies on Thursday night she wanted her team to shoot.

"Just keep shooting and play our game."

You have to control the puck in order to shoot, and give credit to the Owatonna Huskies, they controlled possession of the puck and handed Faribault their first loss of the season 2-0.

Owatonna's first goal came 1:22 into the second period when sophomore Jamie Davison smacked a slap shot from just inside the Falcon blue line. An assist was credited to sophomore Jenna VonRuden.

The Big Nine Conference's leading scorer Jessica VonRuden would score the next goal with 1:13 to go in the game after intercepting a pass and skating down the slot and burying the puck unassisted.

Faribault had their chances. They simply did not control the puck even when they had a two-person advantage in the second period.

Faribault was 0 for 4 on the power play and did not have many shots when they were on the advantage. The Huskies were 0 for 1 on the power play.

The shots on goal were 25 for Owatonna and 19 for Faribault.

The Falcons fell to 8-1-2 and 7-1 in the conference and Owatonna improved to 8-3 overall and picked up their sixth Big Nine win.

Faribault is at Winona at 2PM Saturday and Owatonna hosts Northfield at 7:30PM Saturday.

In other Big Nine girls hockey, Rochester John Marshall rolled over Winona 9-0, Rochester Century downed Rochester Mayo 8-3, Mankato East blanked Albert Lea 5-0 and Red Wing dominated Austin 6-2. In a nonconference affair, Mankato West skated past Worthington 3-0.
