The Owatonna High School girls hockey team makes a trip to hockey country Friday, November 20, playing at Eveleth-Gilbert.

Huskies coach Tim Hunst likes the trip as a good bonding experience for the team as well as a chance to learn a little history of the sport. The U.S. Hockey Hall of Fame is in Eveleth and the team plans a stop at the largest hockey stick in the world.

The Huskies won two games at a tournament in Eveleth two seasons ago. This year they will play the Golden Bears at 7:30PM Friday night then play at top-10 ranked Orono on Saturday afternoon at 2PM. Owatonna plays at Rochester Mayo on Tuesday, November 24, at 7:30PM with the game on Kat Kountry 105FM. Their next home game is Thursday, December 3, against defending Big Nine champ Rochester John Marshall.

The Huskies (2-2) are a Section 1A team this season. Declining participation has forced some programs to consolidate. That created an imbalance of AA teams. Owatonna was one of the smaller AA teams. They are now a bigger A team. Red Wing is the five-time Section 1A champ. Owatonna lost to the Wingers 6-2 on November 12 but out-shot the Wingers and missed on some good scoring chances.

KRFO's Roy Koenig talked with OHS sophomore Rilee Schmidt before a recent game.
