The Owatonna boys hockey team dominated Rochester Mayo on Saturday night, winning 9-0. The OHS girls held off the Spartans for a 3-2 win.

Owatonna's recent strong play was on display again Saturday night at Graham Arena in Rochester during a 9-0 rout of the Spartans. It was the final game for Owatonna hockey against longtime Mayo coach Lorne Grosso, who is retiring this season after 49 years leading the program. The recent rivalry between the teams has produced very competitive games. Twelve of the previous 15 games were decided by two goals or less.

The Huskies turned the game into a one-sided affair midway through the first period. In a span of 43 seconds the Huskies got goals from Austin Medvec, Adam Rehman and Tyler Wencl. Medvec's marker was his first varsity goal. Noal Scheid added a short-handed, breakaway goal late in the first period for a 4-0 lead at the break, his team-leading 15th goal.

Kade Friedrichs scored his 10th of the season halfway through the second period. Rehman added his second of the night for a 6-0 lead after two. Rehman notched his first hat trick early in the third. Mitchell Wiese and Kodey Kiel rounded out the scoring in the 9-0 victory. Ryan Johnson made 11 saves for his third shutout in four varsity starts. Johnson earned the Kottke Jeweler's diamond player of the game honor.

Owatonna has outscored their last two opponents 20-0 and has won three of its last four. OHS (8-7-1 overall, 6-3 in the Big Nine) will host Faribault (4-11, 2-9) Tuesday night at 7PM on Power 96 radio.

The Owatonna girls hockey team won its third straight game, beating Mayo 3-2 at Four Seasons on Saturday night. It was also Owatonna's Skate for a Cure cancer fundraising night. Rilee Schmidt and Maylynn Prokopec scored first-period goals for a 2-0 lead that stood until early in the third when Mayo scored. The Huskies answered back with Jessica "Betty" VonRuden's 33rd goal of the season at 11:22 for a 3-1 lead. Mayo narrowed the gap at 14:44 for the final margin. Owatonna out shot Mayo 23-21. Laura Ebeling made 19 saves for the win.

Owatonna (15-6, 10-3) plays at conference co-leader Rochester John Marshall / Lourdes (12-9, 12-2) Tuesday at 5:30PM on KRFO AM 1390. The Rockets beat Owatonna 2-0 in early December. The conference race is a close one with two weeks to go in the season. JM is tied with Red Wing atop the standings. Northfield, Faribault and Owatonna are all close behind.

During Saturday's KRFO coaches show, boys hockey coach Josh Storm talked about a record-setting performance against Mankato East on Thursday and his admiration of Mayo coach Grosso.
