OHS baseball and girls lacrosse are in the thick of contention for Big Nine championships this spring. The lacrosse team could clinch Tuesday.

The Huskies girls lacrosse team is 6-0 in conference play entering their game at Rochester Mayo on Monday night at 7:30PM. The Spartans are in second place in the league at 4-2. If the Huskies win Monday, they can clinch the Big Nine title Tuesday at Mankato. Owatonna beat Mayo 12-1 on May 5. This is the first year of a Big Nine title in girls and boys lacrosse thanks to Mankato joining the high school league. Northfield leads the boys standings with a 7-0 mark. Owatonna is 3-4 in conference action.

Owatonna baseball is one of three teams with two Big Nine losses, according to league standings assembled by KRFO radio. The first meeting between teams counts in the conference standings. If the teams play a second time it is a nonconference game. KRFO radio reviewed the scores posted on www.minnesota-scores.net and offers the following as the unofficial Big Nine standings.

  • Mankato West 7-2
  • Owatonna 6-2
  • Northfield 5-2
  • Red Wing 6-3
  • Austin 5-3
  • Rochester Mayo 4-4
  • Albert Lea 4-4
  • Winona 3-4
  • Mankato East 3-5
  • Rochester JM 3-5
  • Rochester Century 2-5
  • Faribault 0-9

The Huskies open play this week with a nonconference clash with No. 20 Eden Prairie at 5PM at Fuller Field at Dartt's Park. Tuesday the Huskies go to Austin. Thursday OHS hosts Winona for Senior Night. Friday the Huskies host New Prague at 7PM. Owatonna baseball is holding several giveaway events this week to attract students to the games. The Huskies wrap up the regular season Monday, May 23, entertaining Rochester JM in a doubleheader. OHS would have to go 3-0 in their remaining conference games to guarantee themselves at least a share of the Big Nine title.

The Huskies varsity coaching staff will host another Ramp Up Pitching Initiative clinic for fourth- and fifth-graders Monday, May 16, after the varsity game.

Monday's sports calendar also shows Owatonna softball at Rochester John Marshall for a 5PM make-up game, boys golf at Austin at 1:30PM and girls golf at Eastwood in Rochester for a 2:30PM match.

KRFO-area baseball on Monday includes NRHEG at Blooming Prairie, Medford at WEM and Hayfield at Triton. Faribault Bethlehem Academy plays at No. 1 Randolph in a Power 96 radio broadcast.

The softball schedule features NRHEG at Blooming Prairie, WEM at Medford and Zumbrota-Mazeppa at Triton.
