He grew up in Louisiana and is one of seven kids. He found success with one hit and others have found success with his songs: Tony Joe White.

Tony Joe White's family, which includes his six siblings, grew up on a cotton farm in Louisiana. They listened to and played the blues, country and gospel. White learned to play the guitar by ear.

White went to Georgia and drove truck before forming bands and going on tour. He began to incorporate some of the songs that he wrote. In the mid-'60s, he signed with a record company in Nashville.

He had success with "Polk Salad Annie." It was a Top 10 hit. His songs have also been recorded by Tina Turner and Dusty Springfield along with Elvis Presley.

His latest, HooDoo, was released in 2013, and was cut in Franklin, Tennessee, in his Church Street Studio. White said the songs were first takes, vocals and all. They, including drummer Bryan Owings and bass player Steve Forrest, would play for a few seconds, hit record and the music would take over.

For more than four decades he has been writing with his wife, Leann, and there could be more. His other CDs are available as a collaboration online.
