They may have only one hit, but they continued to record, go on tour and be very popular with hits on R&B charts -- Bar-Kays from Memphis, according to their website.

Larry Dodson, who is the lead singer, and James Alexander, bass player, are the founders of the Bar-Kays. Also members of the group are Angelo Earl and Mike Anderson, both on guitar, Ezra Williams and Mark Bynum with the keyboards, Carlos Sargent on drums and Robert Day on backup vocals.

In 1967, the Bar-Kays' chart topper "Soulfinger" put them as backup for Otis Redding on his Worldwide Tour that had a disastrous finale when Redding and four members of the group were in a tragic plane accident.

Larry Dodson recruited new members and continued to be back-up for Carla Thomas, among others, and were part of Isaac Hayes' Grammy Award-winning album Shaft.

The Bar-Kays success came from stage performances, and they were headliners to start the show off right. They had hits through the '80s. Alexander and Dodson put together a new Bar-Kays in the '90s with more of the same upbeat and funky style.

The group has 30 albums and 20 Top Ten singles. They have created their own label in Memphis, including a gospel label. The Bar-Kays have gone overseas to perform for U.S. troops and volunteered their time with students.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and Stax Museum of American Soul Music have documented their musical journey.Their stage fashion and equipment are in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. In 2013, they became members of the Memphis Music Hall of Fame, according to that website.

James Alexander said they had wisdom beyond their years at 17 and 18, and made the decision that the band would carry on if anything happened. "And the legend continues," Larry Dodson said.
