NRHEG Stages Second Half Comeback to Win Subsection Title

The NRHEG girls basketball team came back from a 10-point halftime deficit to beat top seed WEM in Monday's 2AA South Subsection final 55-52 at MSU-Mankato.

The victory sends New Richland-Hartland-Ellendale-Geneva to the section final Friday night at 8PM versus Norwood Young America, also at Minnesota State.

In Monday's game, the Panthers struggled from the floor and the free throw line in the first half. Waterville-Elysian-Morristown, on the other hand, hit five three-pointers while building a 10-point lead at the break.

In the second half the roles were reversed, with NRHEG drilling seven three-points while holding the Bucs to one. The Panthers erased the deficit quickly and eventually went up by six points. WEM battled back to within one point. NRHEG's Kayley Camerer hit a pair of late free throws to regain some cushion. The Bucs had several chances to tie the game in the closing minute but couldn't connect.

NRHEG was led by Maddie Wagner's 13 points. Rachel Collins scored 12. Hailey Schuller scored nine points, all on threes. Kate Mosberg led WEM with 14 points.

The Panthers' opponent Friday night, Norwood Young America, outlasted St. Peter in Monday's North Subsection final 59-56 in double overtime. NYA won the section title last winter. NRHEG won the previous three Section 2AA titles.
