The opening week of the high school football season played out the way many would have predicted in the Big Southeast District.

Owatonna got within one touchdown of No. 2AAAAA Mankato West a couple of times in the second half after falling behind 20-0. The Scarlets won 34-19 and showed they're are a contender to get to US Bank Stadium at playoff time. Owatonna coach Jeff Williams said he was encouraged about his team after a hard fight against West. The Huskies will host Rochester John Marshall Friday September 9 at 7PM.

It is the Hall of Fame game with the formal induction of Dale Timm, Tim Braaten, Joe Kiley, Laura Kenow and Todd Hale at halftime. Wells Federal Bank will host a free pregame picnic at 6PM in the south parking lot.

John Marshall pulled away from Austin for a 45-20 victory despite turning the ball over five times. Jordan Velez rushed for 248 yards and four touchdowns. The Rockets graduated six All-District players off of a section championship team including Defensive Player of the Year in the district Emmanuel Tetteh-Jada and Offensive Player of the Year Cazz Martin.

Rochester Mayo topped Faribault 29-16. The Falcons missed on a fourth and goal from the two-yard line that would have tied the game. Mayo drove the length of the field in response.

Winona followed up their eight-win season from 2015 with a solid 28-12 victory over Rochester Century. The Winhawks held the Panthers to -22 yards rushing.

Mankato East scored on a 70-yard pass play on their first snap on their way to a 36-7 win over New Prague.

Northfield ran over Red Wing 48-13 with 329 yards on the ground.

Week two includes Northfield at New Prague, Mankato East vs Mankato West, Austin at Winona, Red Wing at Faribualt and Rochester Century at Mayo.
