New and Old at the Steele County Free Fair

The Steele County Free Fair is Tuesday through Sunday, Aug. 18-23. The opening flag raising ceremonies are sponsored by the VFW and Auxiliary and will begin at 5PM on Tuesday the 18th. This year veterans to be honored will be from the decade of the '80s.

Also the VFW and Auxiliary have furnished more than 100 American flags throughout the fairgrounds.

Every year new and old mix at the fair. This year offers a little of both with the announcement that Luverne Wanous will entertain fairgoers after a retirement of two years. He will be at the main entrances of the Four Seasons Center with his concertina.

The Aurora Diner is celebrating its 50th anniversary at the fair. It opened in 1965 to serve food to those working in the barns. All the food and desserts are homemade and served from 6AM to 9PM.

The fair has added a new stage just east of the 4-H building. Students in the summer program at Camp Pillsbury will perform daily. Joyce Rice will be on the stage several times daily with "Thank A Farmer" Magic Show.

A traditional worship service will be at 9:30AM Sunday in the Village of Yesteryear with "Worship in the Village." Senior Place's own Golden Tones will be providing music during the service.

A second service has been added and it will take place in Fair Square Park. It is going to be a contemporary service Sunday at 11AM. Trinity Lutheran Church will be providing the music.

Also a reminder, no pets, bicycles, Segways or skateboards are allowed on the fairgrounds. Permits for golf carts on the fairgrounds are at the fair office.
