The Medford High School trap shooting team qualified for the MSHSL tournament June 20 after taking fifth place in Alexandria on Friday.

After a fourth-place finish in their conference during the regular season, Medford took fifth place in Class AA during the Minnesota Clay Target League state meet. The state high school league invites the top teams in each class from the Alexandria meet to participate in a one-day state tournament at the Minneapolis Gun Club in Prior Lake.

The following scores counted for Medford's team score of 467. Each total is out of 100 targets.

  • Jake Gedicke, 96
  • Richard Iverson, 96
  • Tate Romnes, 94
  • Wyatt Volkmann, 91
  • Brennan Hanson, 90

The six-day meet in Alexandria is the biggest shooting meet in the world, with more than 5,600 high school shooters from around the state taking part.

The high school league also will hold an individual tournament Saturday. The top 100 shooters from the five-week regular season are invited to that competition. Medford has two individual shooters, Nick Meixner and Zach Gedicki. NRHEG's Frank Altrichter also qualified. Each averaged 23 or more per round of 25 clay targets.

The Minnesota State High School League is the first in the nation to sponsor a clay target state tournament. The spring season featured 268 teams representing more than 450 high schools. More than 8,600 shooters were registered. That makes trap shooting the second-highest participation sport in Minnesota, behind only football.
