Owatonna scored first. But Mayo tied the game and scored a golden goal less than five minutes into overtime to beat the Huskies 2-1 in the Section 1AA boys' soccer final.

The first half ended in a scoreless tie, but not for a lack of opportunities. Mayo had eight shots on goal, hit a post, put a header just wide and had six corner kicks. Owatonna junior goalkeeper Aidan Buryska had several great saves. The Huskies had just two shots on goal through 40 minutes but had several scoring chances.

Ten minutes into the second half, Huskies senior Mark Hanson got through the defense for a short breakaway and put the ball into the back of the net. Rochester Mayo evened the match at 1-1 about seven minutes later on a goal by Jonathon Loera. The Spartans put just two shots on goal in the second half, but hit another pipe. The Spartans got the ball past Buryska with about six minutes to go, but OHS senior Jared Becker stopped it from entering the goal. The Huskies put six shots on net in the second, including another great chance for Hanson.

Mayo's Joseph Sedarski scored during a flurry in front of the Owatonna goal just over four minutes into overtime.

Mayo advances to the state tournament. This was Owatonna's fourth straight appearance in the Section 1AA final. They won the title in 2012 and 2013 and finished behind John Marshall in 2014.

Owatonna ends the season with a 13-3-2 record. Seniors on the Huskies playoff roster include Mark Hanson, Ryan Huxford, Caleb Slegh, Ryan Guenther, Ricardo Mercado, Luke Bunkers, Daniel Kaupa, Greg Simpkins, Jared Becker and Rodrigo Solis.
